The role

Forward deployed engineer: what the job is and who hires

A forward deployed engineer is a software engineer who works inside a customer's business, building and shipping what that customer needs. Here is where the role came from, how Palantir, OpenAI and Anthropic describe it, and what they post as pay.

The job

What a forward deployed engineer does

A forward deployed engineer sits with one customer and builds for that customer. Instead of writing one feature that ships to thousands of accounts, they learn how a business runs, then design, build and roll out software that fits it.

The companies that hire for the role describe the same core loop:

  • Scope the problem with the customer's engineers and the people who do the work.
  • Design and build the system, often on the employer's own platform or models.
  • Ship it to production and measure whether people actually use it.
  • Bring lessons back to the product team so the next customer gets them built in.

How Palantir, OpenAI and Anthropic describe the job

Each company writes the job a little differently. These summaries come from their current job postings and engineering blogs.

Palantir logo

Palantir

Forward Deployed Software Engineers embed with customers and configure Palantir's existing platforms for their hardest problems. The current posting lists architecture work, massive-scale data, custom applications and work with customer stakeholders up to executives. It asks for 1+ years of experience after college and travel up to 25%.

OpenAI logo

OpenAI

OpenAI FDEs own discovery, scoping, system design, the build and the production rollout, working directly with customer engineering and domain teams. Success is measured by production adoption, workflow impact and eval feedback. The San Francisco role is hybrid, three office days a week, with travel up to 50%.

Anthropic logo

Anthropic

Anthropic FDEs build production applications with Claude inside customer systems. The posting names deliverables like MCP servers, sub-agents and agent skills, plus hands-on deployment support and write-ups of repeatable deployment patterns for Anthropic's product and engineering teams.

Databricks logo

Databricks

Databricks FDEs build and put customers' data and AI solutions into production on the Databricks platform, own the architecture and lead design decisions. The posting notes that FDEs are billable and deliver projects to a written specification.

History

Where the forward deployed engineer role came from

Palantir claims the title. Its current posting is headed "The Original Forward Deployed Software Engineer". A 2019 Palantir blog post says software engineers and forward deployed engineers are its two largest engineering roles, nicknamed "Devs" and "Deltas". The Delta name goes back to Palantir's early business development teams, each named after a NATO alphabet letter.

Palantir pairs Deltas with Deployment Strategists, nicknamed "Echos". Its 2022 post says Echos lean toward product management and Deltas lean technical, though the line between them often blurs.

Ramp's engineering blog gives a short history of how the role spread. In Ramp's account, it stayed mostly inside Palantir for over a decade. Then, in the late 2010s, Scale AI and C3.ai adopted the title and Databricks and Snowflake built similar teams. Today the AI labs hire for it too.

Palantir sums up the difference from a regular software engineer as "one customer, many capabilities." Our forward deployed engineer vs software engineer guide compares the two jobs side by side.

What the postings ask for

  • Strong coding, usually Python, TypeScript, Java or C++ (Palantir lists these).
  • Comfort working with customer engineers and executives in the same week.
  • Travel, from up to 25% (Palantir) to up to 50% (OpenAI).
  • Production experience with data systems, AI models or both.

Need the work, not the job opening?

Hiring forward deployed engineers takes months. Firms that embed engineering teams can start sooner and leave when the work is done.

Questions

Common questions

What does FDE stand for?

FDE stands for forward deployed engineer. Palantir's version of the title is Forward Deployed Software Engineer (FDSE), and inside Palantir the role is nicknamed "Delta".

Is a forward deployed engineer a consultant?

Palantir says no. In its description, a consultant usually hands over a one-time analysis or recommendation, while an FDE builds a lasting solution with the customer by deploying software and does far more engineering.

How much do forward deployed engineers travel?

It depends on the company. Palantir's FDSE posting lists travel up to 25% and its Deployment Strategist posting lists 25% to 75%. OpenAI's San Francisco FDE posting lists up to 50%, with three office days a week.

Do forward deployed engineers write code?

Yes. Palantir, OpenAI, Anthropic and Databricks all describe FDEs as engineers who design, build and ship production software. Ramp says its FDEs spend most of their time building features, many of which ship in the core product.

Can a company hire forward deployed engineers without building its own team?

Yes. Engineering firms and consultancies offer embedded or forward deployed teams on a project or ongoing basis. Our list of forward deployed engineering companies shows who offers it and how you buy.
